Cool Blue Perivolos Beach

1
One of the more fashionable beach areas to visit in Santorini, Perivolos Beach is situated in the south eastern part of the island. Several miles of dark volcanic sand run parallel to the coastal road. During the summer months, holidaymakers and locals both, cruise up and down the strip in search of that perfect café or patch of sand.

They say that when you go abroad you should go where the locals go. Perivolos beach is one of those places. One reason is that there is always something happening in Perivolos. In fact, Perivolos is an extension of Santorini’s nightlife by day. Another reason is the extensive choice of things to do.  Friendly beach volley games are a regular thing, water sports are available and there are loads of beach bars & restaurants to choose from.

Chique establishments such as Wet Stories Beach Bar and Seaside by Notos offer glamour and ambiance.  If you want to let your hair down, dance to pumping music and join in the fun, check out Chilli Beach Bar and Jojo’s.

Occasionally the beach bars hold live “happenings” with popular Greek singers, bands and DJs making guest appearances. And if you stick around until late afternoon or early evening, you might witness a wedding and wedding reception on the beach.

Tip If you want to rent sunbeds and umbrellas, keep in mind that these are provided by the establishment renting that part of the beach. There is a fee for this (someone will come with a ticket you must purchase). You are also expected to order something from the bar. Most places offer meals and snacks.  If this isn’t your cup of tea, there are open beach areas to lay your towel.

Perivolos beach is connected to Perissa beach, making it the longest stretch of sand on the island. We’ll be talking about Perissa at a later date.

Buses to Perivolos Beach

Buses leave from Fira fairly regularly (every 30 minutes). The main bus depot is below the main square. Once you get to Perivolos, there is a bus stop on the beach road. This is where you get off. Return buses should be caught at the same point. They then circle around Perissa square and take the return journey back to Fira. The distance from Fira town (Santorini’s capital) to Perivolos is about  13 km.
